The chapters go beyond the basics that characterize much of the literature on dance/movement therapy, and each of the topics covered offers a theoretical perspective followed by case studies that emphasize the techniques used in the varied settings. Several different theoretical points of view are presented in the chapters, illuminating the different paths through which dance can be approached in therapy.

We must pause with awe when it comes to the human brain. We must wonder to contemplate the marvels and mysteries of the three pounds of pinkish-gray tissue contained within our heads. The brain contains upward of 12 billion nerve cells, each of which may potentially be linked to countless others. Possible 'telephone connections' in switchboards of the brain are so numerous as to be incomprehensible. A credible estimate sets the figure at 10 followed by 23 zeros. Unconsciousness, that last several minutes or more following a head injury, requires close care. Some brain injuries can cause lasting damage to the brain tissue and leave residuals of severe headaches, dizziness, and even paralysis or convulsions. Very severe brain injury with hemorrhage and swelling of the brain substance (compression) can lead to death! The Brain Is Our Spark of Life.

From player to…daddy? Hollywood agent Ian Schaffer could have his pick of gorgeous women. So he's totally thunderstruck by the intensity of his attraction to horse trainer Cassie Barrington. The single mom, with her luscious curves and unadorned beauty, is so much hotter than the bombshells he's used to. But it's her vulnerability and passion that the jaded player finds utterly irresistible—and that sets off alarm bells, because Ian's as commitment-shy as they come. A woman with a child is absolutely off-limits! Too bad the voluptuous mom has Ian aching to break all his old rules….

For most of its thirteen-year history as a beloved and decorated music magazine, No Depression sought to be an instrument of change: to draw attention to the deep well of American musical traditions; to shine a light on performers whose gifts far exceed the size of their audiences or their pocketbooks; and to provide a safe harbor for the best long-form writing about music on the newsstand. These traditions continue through No Depression's now semi-annual series of bookazines. The inaugural bookazine, numberedND #76so as to make explicit the continuity betweenNo Depression's original and new formats, focused on the next generation of emerging roots music performers.ND #78, due out the fall of 2009, will focus on prominent families in American roots music, kinfolk who have stretched their artistic influence across generations. This will include in-depth pieces about bedrock clans of country music—the Carters and the Cashes—and folk music—the Guthries and the Seegers; profiles of country mavericks Steve and Justin Townes Earle and of jazz great Charlie Haden and his musically adventurous children; plus a more 'metaphorical family' piece on the artistic 'sons' of bluesman Rev. Gary Davis. The magazine's cofounders and coeditors, Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, continue to guide the bookazine. The magazine's senior writers and contributors remain on board to shape the tone and voice of the bookazine, and its distinctive graphic design imprint continues in the hands of ND art director Grant Alden.

The inspiring true story of a woman who learned that it’s never too late to live the life you want As a young girl growing up in the 1950s in central Pennsylvania, Vicki Grubic Riordan idolized stars like Shirley Temple and Gene Kelly. She soon found her calling as a dance instructor, but like many baby boomers, she put her passion on hold to focus on starting a family. Only when her marriage ended and she was left with little means of support for herself and her two young sons did Vicki return to her first true love: teaching dance. In doing so, she found much more than a way to make a living: she found a way to make a difference. With her exuberant personality, infectious enthusiasm, and unwavering belief in the magic of movement to make even the darkest times better, Vicki has inspired thousands of women to do things they never dreamed possible. At the age of sixty-two, when her peers were thinking about retirement, Vicki opened the doors to what has become America’s largest adult tap dancing studio. She has gone from teaching fifty students a year to teaching more than five hundred, and thanks to Vicki, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, has become the unofficial tap capital of the world and the home of her celebrated “Tap Pups.” The majority of the women (and a handful of men) in her classes are in their fifties and sixties, but instead of yielding to the expectation that they’d be slowing down at this stage of life, tap has helped them to get in touch with their own natural rhythm. Tap helped Anni, 56, get through a difficult divorce with grace. It gave Betsy a newfound self-confidence, and at 57 she was inspired to wear eye makeup for the first time in thirty years. And when Jeanne, 62, was diagnosed with cancer, the Tap Pups rallied to offer their full support. Vicki’s students come from all walks of life: teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, insurance agents, therapists, CPAs, retirees—married, divorced, single, and widowed—but through dancing together, no matter their innate talent or years of experience, Vicki’s Tap Pups have found a potent source of friendship, vitality, and fulfillment. After years of putting everyone else first, these women know that now it’s their time to shine. In Encore Performance, Vicki inspires readers of all ages to listen to the beat of their own hearts and dance through life as they were born to do.
Philip Sparke's popular Song and Dance for cornet is now available for soloist with concert band. The Song commences with a 'Scotch snap' rhythm leading to a lyrical cadenza and ending with a return of the opening theme, muted. The Dance is lively and full of cross rhythms, but tonal and tuneful. Genre: Solo Trumpet with. Dance Movements. Dance Movements was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and first performed by them at the Florida Music Educators' Association Convention in January 1996. It is cast in four movements which play without a break; the second and third feature woodwinds and brass respectively.
Dance Movements Dance Movements was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and first performed by them at the Florida Music Educators’ Association Convention in January 1996. It is cast in four movements which play without a break; the second and third feature woodwinds and brass respectively. In many respects, the circumstances of the commission itself were the musical inspiration for the piece: I had been asked to write for a very large band, which included piano and harp. It was the first time I had used these instruments in a concert band score and (as in Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements) their presence coloured the score and, indeed, the type of music I wrote. The four movements are all dance-inspired, although no specific dance rhythms are used.
The first has a Latin American feel and uses xylophone, cabasa, tambourine and wood block to give local colour. The second woodwind movement uses a tune that had been plaguing me for some time and is, I suppose, in the style of an English country dance. The brass movement was composed without a specific dance analogy, but I think it can been seen as a love duet in classical ballet.
The fourth and longest movement has, I hope, cured me of a ten-year fascination, almost obsession, with the music of Leonard Bernstein and I will readily admit that it owes its existence to the fantastic dance music in West Side Story. Ritmico The opening theme on horns and saxophones is played amidst stabbing chords from the top and bottom of the band. A gentler theme follows on piccolo and clarinet, followed by the flute, oboe, trumpet, harp and glockenspiel. The main motif of the movement then arrives, which includes a dotted rhythm, which is to recur at all significant moments. A climax is reached and an angular figure follows on oboes, saxophones and clarinets.
Previous material then reappears to bring the movement to a close. Molto Vivo (for the Woodwinds) The second movement starts with a rustic dance tune, which is continually interrupted. It passes through various keys and stages of development until a bubbling ostinato arrives on piano, harp, glockenspiel and cello. Over this, the oboe lays a languid tune, which is then taken up by soprano and alto saxophones. Clarinets and lower winds introduce a new idea; it is built on 9 th and 11 th chords, highly syncopated and interspersed by snatches of the ostinato. Eventually the oboe theme reappears, accompanied by the lower wind chords. The dance tune then establishes itself once more and reaches a climax before winding down to a close.
Lento (for the Brass) The third movement opens with whispering muted trumpets, harp and vibraphone. Declamatory statements from horn and trombone answer each other and a slow and majestic chorale gets underway.
Trumpets join to reach a climax where the original trombone statement reappears, bringing back the opening trumpets figures. Molto ritmico The final movement bursts into life with a passage featuring the percussion section.
The whole band then joins in until a driving bass ostinato establishes itself. Melodic snatches are thrown around the band until a gradual crescendo leads to a unison passage for the entire band.
A robust theme appears on horns and saxophones but eventually the earlier sinister music returns. After a short pause a plaintive tune on the woodwinds leads to a more rhythmic one on the brass but it is not long before the percussion remind us of the opening of the movement and the ostinato reappears. The robust horn tune is this time played by the full band but the moment of triumph is short and a running passage appears which starts in the bottom of the band but works its way to the upper woodwinds. Eventually the brass plays a noble fanfare which dispels the darker mood and ends the movement in a blaze of colour.
